You Found My Pet!

If your pet is in our shelter, our #1 priority is to reunite you with your pet!

Many people assume that they cannot afford to pay the fees (listed below) to get their pet back home. Our goal is to make sure they can! We have a variety of options available to ensure that loving pet owners can get their pet out of the shelter, regardless of their financial situation or income. If your lost pet is at the shelter, please email us ASAP at animalservices@kerncounty.com

Myths about getting your pet out of the shelter -

"The fees are too high! It's going to cost a lot of money to get my pet back. I can't afford it." NOT TRUE. As stated above, we have a variety of options available to ensure that loving pet owners can get their pet out of the shelter, regardless of their financial situation or income. The law does require that we change fees. However, we have the freedom, flexibility, funds, and programs that allow us to work with pet owners to come up with plans and solutions that will reunite them with their pets immediately with minimal out-of-pocket expense. Most times, pets can go back home with their owners for just $15.

"I'm going to get in trouble or get a ticket" NOT TRUE. Unfortunately, 1 out of 3 pets get lost or go missing at some point in their lifetime. Although it's unfortunate, it's not uncommon. Even the very best pet owners sometimes lose their dogs for no fault of their own. The last thing we want to do is punish someone who cares about their pet and wants to bring it back home. We celebrate owners who make the effort to find their lost pet and want to bring it back home!

"My pet is better off at the shelter. Someone else will want it." NOT TRUE. Every pet that comes to our shelter is at risk of euthanasia. More dogs come into the shelter every day than leave. We are always overcrowded and pushed beyond our capacity. Day after day, great dogs who were wonderful pets, and would be a great addition to a home or family do not make it out of the shelter. If you are having problems being a responsible pet owner, there are services and program available to help. If you need help, email us at animalservices@kerncounty.com.
